Torso Length Basics
and why it matters
Torso length is the foundation of a comfortable carry, and getting it wrong is one of the fastest ways to make a good pack feel bad.
When your torso length is correct, the hipbelt sits on your hips, not your waist, which lets your legs carry the load instead of your shoulders. Your spine stays neutral, your posture stays relaxed, and the pack moves with you instead of pulling you out of position. A properly sized torso makes every mile smoother, more efficient, and less fatiguing.
When the torso length is off, everything starts to work against you. Too short, and the shoulder straps drag the load downward, tightening your neck and collapsing your posture. Too long, and the hipbelt floats uselessly while the pack sags and throws off your balance. Most discomfort hikers blame on features or padding is actually caused by the wrong torso size. Fix this one measurement, and the whole pack transforms.
